Guided Biofilm Therapy
Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT) is an advanced method of professional dental cleaning designed to be gentle, effective, and minimally invasive. Unlike traditional cleaning that relies heavily on scraping with sharp instruments, GBT focuses on the systematic removal of biofilm (the sticky layer of bacteria on teeth and gums) and soft deposits.
The process begins with the application of a plaque-disclosing dye, which makes dental biofilm visible so both the dentist and patient can clearly see where it is located. This step helps guide the cleaning and also motivates patients to improve their home care. Next, an air-polishing device is used: it sprays a controlled stream of warm water, air, and a gentle powder that removes biofilm and stains from teeth, gums, orthodontic brackets, and even dental implants. If there are hard deposits (tartar), they are carefully removed with ultrasonic instruments, which vibrate and flush them away with minimal discomfort.
GBT is considered safer for enamel, gums, and restorations than traditional methods, and it reduces sensitivity during treatment. It is also tailored to each patient’s needs and can be repeated regularly as part of a preventive care plan.
